The top ten overnight updated
Now that the dust has settled in the service area and the cars are put to bed in Parc Ferme, we can bring you an updated look at the top 10 and some stories from below. The top 10 is dominated by the two Darrians of Mark Straker and James Stafford. The gap of 50″ can be deceptive if you don’t actually back at the six stage times of the first day. Straker only set one stage time faster than Stafford all day, it just happened to be the one that Stafford’s car suffered suspension damage as it jumped and landed too hard over a crest on SS4. In all the other five stages, where Stafford set fastest times for all of those five, he took took back 35″ out of Straker and if that had continued in that vein on SS4, where Stafford lost 1’28” to Straker, would we probably be looking at Stafford leading overnight, the answer would probably have to be yes. In the true spirit of rallying where Straker gave Stafford the suspension part needed to get going again, could this come back to bite him in the rear axle, possibly.
Wesley Patterson was the other driver we needed the results to settle out to show the true picture. The closeness of the gap between him and Stafford is a little false given Stafford’s problems. He is further back pace wise than the 11″ on the time sheet at the moment. The battle Patterson is going to have is with Frank Kelly. The gap between the two is 16″ between the two Escorts. Patterson got the better of Kelly on 4 of the 6 stages, so it will be all to play for between the two for the final place on the podium. To that end, do we count George Condell out of the equation for 3rd? He is only 15″ behind Kelly and bettered Kelly’s times on the first three stages of the six.
Simon Chapman in the Staria is 35″ further back in 6th, 22″ clear of the Evo 10 of Graham Scallan. This might be a lot closer if Scallan hadn’t had problems with a diff that kept locking in dry setting, making the car unsteerable. It is a repeat of the problem that hit the Evo in Monaghan and one that is foxing his crew ashow to cure it. He had to drive most of the day in a wet setting, losing some time during the day possibly. If this cures itself on day 2, or the weather is actually wet, this gap could possibly get closer, or maybe be reversed.
Liam Howlett or Eugene Meegan can’t be taken out of the picture of pushing Scallan for 7th, they are only 6″ & 8″ behind Scallan respectively, with John Stafford 26″ further adrift in 10th. The smallish gap of 30″ between 6th and 9th will hopefully make for a good second day. The look of the top 10 as they will start in the morning could look very different by the time the six stages of the day are finished.
JF Shovlin, Aled Davies, Rathew Roberts, Paul Doyle & Mark Jones are only seperated by 5″ in the battle for 31st to 25th is a great battle to keep an eye on on day two as well as looking at the top 10. Class battles will be the big battles down the field, battles that are every bit as good as the big name duels at the top end. Richard Moore & Thomas O’Rourke will want to hold on to their class leading positions to keep the good local showing. All these battles to pan out over the closing six stages of what is turning out to be a very entertaining rally all around, just what the fans and organisers want.
To make everyone feel they are as important as the rest, we are posting all 120 times for the surviving cars that made it to the end of day 1, even if under super rally rules, take your ti,e to scroll down and see your name if you are still there.
