An unprecedented number of spectators for a late night stage, resulting in major overcrowding in Special Stage 15.

As a result, the stage was cancelled for safety reasons shortly after the fourteenth car, belonging to Delacour in a Peugeot, had completed his round.

The Clerk of the Course had earlier stopped Special Stages 13, 14 and 15 for all but the top 65 competitors. The remainder re-grouped and returned to Cheltenham.

This followed an announcement by the police that the stages were filled to capacity with spectators and that any additional cars would be turned away.

No word on how the Irish - and Eamonn Boland - have been faring this morning, but there are all still there.

Of the familiar names to Wexford and South-East audiences, only Gary Midwinter has bowed out.
