Brotherly Strife - Both McRaes Crash Out
Alistair McRae Crashes Out

NetworkRally Report 7
3:20pm - Monday, November 22nd, 1999

Colin McRae is out of the Network Q.

He went out seven kilometres into the final stage of leg two in the fifteenth stage.

The Scot's Ford Focus was sliding off the track, hitting a car left from the earlier running of the stage.

Two wheels were torn off according to McRae.

Both driver and navigator Nicky Grist are reported to be fine.

The other McRae, Alistair, crashed out earlier in the day.

Elsewhere, Richard Burns managed to hold onto his lead despite suffering an under-bonnet fire.

With two stages to go on day two, he had opened up a 26.7-second lead over Subaru team-mate Juha Kankkunen.

The Englishman's victory bid looked to have literally gone up in flames when his engine caught fire on a road section following stage 11.

But Burns and co-driver Robert Reid extinguished the blaze, then got back in the car and limped to the Builth Wells service area where their mechanics resolved the problem.

It was a worrying end to what had been a fantastic second morning for Burns, whose performance in mid-Wales had rendered his 'Battle of Britain' with McRae a one-sided affair.

No word yet on how Eamonn Boland's been faring in tonight's stages.
