Richard Burns has won the Network Q Rally of Great Britain, ending the season in second spot in the World Rally Championship - a career best for the Englishman - while Eamonn Boland capped a solid weekend by finishing 36th.
Burns held off Subaru team-mate Juha Kankkunen to take the crown, despite major problems on day two.
A delighted Burns attributed the support of his team to his strong performance in the rally. "It's a fantastic result to be part of a Subaru 1-2. Everything has worked well for me: the car, the tyres, the mechanics and the whole team. It's fantastic to have so many people cheering you on, too. There were even fireworks on the hills at one point!
"I've been a lot more relaxed this year and I think this has helped me on this year's event."
World champion Tommi Makinen went out while travelling to the 20th stage - unluckily, his Mitsubishi's engine overheated.
Welshman Gwyndaf Evans was forced to retire in the penultimate stage when his SEAT Cordoba overheated, with Carlos Sainz also suffered accursed luck when his suspension gave way in the same stage.
Similar problems last year cost the Spaniard the Championship he was defending from 1997.
The final stage was stopped after car 109 caught fire.
The fire was successfully extinguished and the crew escaped unharmed, but the remaining thirty cars ran through the stage non-competitively.
Eamonn Boland did what so many big names failed to do - finish.
The Wexford Motor Club driver, partnered by Welshman Alun Cook, finished a highly creditable 36th in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.
There were some impressive Irish performances - Mark Higgins finished 15th, Bertie Fisher's Subaru Impreza 555 ended up in 21st having climbed from the mid-fifties, then came Boland in 36th.
Kenny McKinstry failed to finish.
