Rally Report 28 Sunday, September 15 2002 - 10:15am Will Downing and John Dier - Rally HQ, Rosslare
The home driver was again the first underneath the arches this morning, as his bid to join the history-makers continues. With Damien Morrissey alongside him, Boland has 1'29" to spare over second-placed Steve Hendy. Boland is hoping to remain consistent, while the Dorset car dealer isn't giving up just yet. Both men's views - and those of many others - can be found running along the right of this report. But better news for Boland this morning - his time for one of yesterday's stages has been rounded down by twenty seconds, meaning the gap is now larger than ever. Third-placed Bob Fowden is pleased with his performance so far, particularly as his Group N car is just fifteen seconds down on Hendy's Group A - placing the Welshman's Lancer Evo 6 in one of the podium positions. John Price is competing in his 734th rally - a tremendous record, especially as he's won nearly 600 of them, and is as competitive today as he was as a young Turk. The Hereford driver's 32 seconds down on Fowden - which could set up an interesting cross-border battle between the two. Tim Ball was next to leave Parc Ferme outside the Crosbie Cedars Hotel this morning, and even though he's only 35 seconds behind the Metro, he also has to look behind him - or maybe even sideways - as Gorey's David James is starting out on an identical time going into day two. The rest of the top ten - consisting of Shay Power, Aaron McHale, Martin O'Connell and Kieran Molloy - won't give up without a fight either, all having a chance of fifth place. The quartet are are only 9, 15, 19 and 23 seconds back on Ball and James respectively. It's looking like one of the tightest top ten battles in years. No wonder Ball said he was going to have to look behind him from the start!
