Irish rallying community in shock
Rally Report 11

Mixed emotions have been displayed following Motorsport Ireland's decision to postpone the Wexford Rally.

While most in Wexford have reacted to the decision with anger and unhappiness, others involved in motorsport have been either philosophical or non-plussed.

Here's a selection of comments from Yahoo's Irish Rallying Mail Group -

"It is such a pity that Wexford had to be called off so close to before it was due to start, I feel sorry for the organisers after all the effort and work that they obviously had put into the whole thing to run it, lets hope they can run their event in the very near future.
"There is one question that I would like to ask, how come the Minister for Agriculture made no fuss about Foot and Mouth all summer but yet once the Tourist season comes to end in this Country all of a sudden it becomes a major issue again, things can`t have deteriorated that quickly I would imagine, the problem has been there all of the time but because of the Tourism in this Country which is very important for the economy it has to be said, the F and M issue was kept very low key, if this didn`t happen then Tourism would have suffered, but once September comes the Tourism is not a priority so we are back to the F and M situation again, I am sure if Wexford was held a month ago then there would have been no problem in running it, and the risks would be no different then as to what they are now, its date is what came against it, maybe the Government should look at the revenue that events such as Rallies and the like bring into this Country and give organisers of events no matter what they are support and guidance to see that events go ahead instead of being cancelled where possible, I know that this is not easy but it is in everyone`s interest to see that cancellations dont happen no matter what the sport or leisure activity is but at the same time to keep the Country F and M free, organisers of events across the Country have obeyed what the Govenment and the Minister of Agriculture has asked them to do with regards cancellations for quite a while, so now maybe the Government should try and support the oragnisers of events like Wexford a bit more over the next few months just like they looked after Tourism over the Summer past."
- Bernard Crowley

"While I agree totally with the need to cancel/postpone events in order to protect our sport I would like to make one or two observations...
1- All motorsport events that I have attended over the past few months since the easing of FMD restrictions have continued to enforce the restrictions up to and including Lismore last weekend.
2- Other sport events/social gathering seem to have a far less serious view on the matter than ours allowing the standards set at the height of the initial outbreak to slip to an almost criminally careless level.
"As someone already mentioned in Lismore at the weekend there seem to be as many English tourists on fishing trips as motorsport followers.... who's to say that these same people weren't using the same equipment in some part of England last week???
"Also I was on a hillwalk on Saturday and we met dozens of tourists but there were no measures in place anywhere.
"We must take all possible steps to ensure we will still be allowed to run events when this is finally behind us."
- Fergus Turner

"As said often before, farmers have always been accommodating in the past with regard to spectator access on stages. We have survived for seven months without this disaster coming to our shores bar one case. All measures should be taken including cancellations unfortunately."
- Noel Riordan

"As you know we are hoping to run a single stage in November NEMC. I have been monitoring the F&M in the Uk, their has been a continuous number of cases in Cumbria between 0 & 4 typically daily. Northumberland has got it back again. I do not know what the whole song and dance is about it has not been eradicated over there.
"I am deeply saddened by this action by Motorsport Ireland, and I feel particularly for the hard working club members of Wexford Motorclub to have their event pulled from under their feet, just as happened to Mayo & District Motorclub. I await the commision's verdict with little optimism.
"I personally think that rallying is the only sport supporting the farming community in any way. Bernard and Ciara have spoken a lot of truth in their mails and made a lot of sense. Read below the latest from www.maff.co.uk
Confirmed cases:
2013 confirmed cases in UK. There were no new cases between 17:00 Sunday 9 September and 17:00 Monday 10 September
"So the problem is escalating. I realise the weather is a major factor. But I think that motorsport Ireland need to call and Emergency meeting and crub the calendar ASAP if that is what is needed to please everybody. I for one will be disappointed if they do not make a call asap. At least they made the news this time, unlike when the initial outbreak broke news, MSI make a statement but 4 days to late.
"I think we will have a quiet couple of months."
- John Bayly

"I also think it is a shame that Wexford has been cancelled , I was looking forward to a great weekend but we have to look at this from a long term view .
"Ireland up to now has done so well to keep the F+M restricted to 1 confirmed case since this spread started almost 7 months ago . I think the measures taken in this country were a key factor in keeping it out and also the way everyone got behind the farming community and cancelled sporting fixtures .
"Britain on the other hand did not take the necessary measures to control the spread . As I am back and forward to England a lot I have seen the measures (or lack of) that has been taken , but for a country whos economy is not majorly dependant on agriculture it is not as detremental to them thats why they could afford to take such an irresponsible approach to it , an approach that used to make my blood boil as the knock on affect did not only affect them but other countries even on mainland Europe .
"We on the other hand have to take ALL necessary measures to control movement around farmland . Rallying is what I enjoy most and I would much rather have full , unrestricted events backed by our farming community in the years to come rather than risk that now .
"We are coming into Autumn and Winter and the kind of weather this virus thrives on and I dont think we can risk it now . Unfortunately Rallying is at the mercy of the IFA and if we show our support to them now it will make our lives a lot easier in the future .
"Agriculture is the life and soul of a lot of our nations people and for the sake of the few events left this year I dont think it is worth risking their livlihoods or our sports future."
- Ciara Conlan

"I competed on the cork forest rally in lismore (great event , well done to all concerned) and my service crew and i stayed in a very large guest house in the villiage of cappaquinn (about 4 miles from lismore )the house had over 30 bedrooms and about half of them where booked by rally drivers and their service crews . the rest of the rooms where filled by british anglers who are to spend the next week on the banks of the blackwater . who knows if these tourists are from an infeted area or not."
