Joe, a member of Wexford Motor Club and who had been co-driver for Mick Kehoe during the event, took ill on the return journey to Rally Headquarters in Rosslare from the end of the final stage in Newbawn.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, who were on the scene immediately, they were unable to resuscitate Mr Stafford.

He was removed to Wexford General Hospital.

Joe, 45, a native of Gusserane, is survived by his parents and family.

As a mark of respect, the celebratory prize-giving ceremony due for Sunday night was postponed to a later date.
