Did Kerryman Thomas Randels believe he had a ghost of a chance when he went out on the course for the very first time Sunday morning?
Seeded sixth in his Escort Mk II, Randels started solidly with an 11:07 on his first traversal of the 10-mile Newbawn stage.
Partnered by Diarmuid Lynch, the man from the Kingdom improved on his time dramatically second time around, slicing 18 seconds off his first mark.
That 10:49 was succeeded by a final round time just one second slower - more than enough to take the class honours.
